Learn to Ride Intro

All beginner riders must know how to ride a bicycle with no training wheels before they can learn how to ride a dirt bike.

  • Popkum Learn To Ride Intro for absolute beginners 3-hour group lesson *includes bike rental and gear.
  • MSF Certified New Rider course – an all-day certificate course for absolute beginners offered in conjunction with BCORMA and the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. On our bikes or yours, gear rental separate.

Learn To Ride Intro is for absolute beginners who have never ridden a dirt bike (or any motorcycle) before. It is a basic introductory course for ages 6 and up (with bicycle skills) that includes gear and motorcycle rental –  everything you need to learn to ride safely! Everyone in the LTR program is a first-timer so there’s no reason to be nervous, but if you are, bring a friend! We have lots of pairs who learn to ride together (parents and kids, siblings, spouses, and friends). Class sizes are kept small (3-8 riders), with a max 1:5 instructor to student ratio. If you have your own group of at least 3 riders (family, friends or work) we can make a private class just for you!

The first hour of the course covers safety information: gearing up and why safety gear is important, and then you learn the parts of the motorcycle and proper use of the controls. The following 2 hours take place on the bike in our specifically designed Training Compound where you will learn:

  • How to put the bike in gear
  • How to use the throttle to accelerate and decelerate
  • How to use the rear brake
  • Body positioning while seated
  • How and why to stand on the pegs while riding
  • Other topics include steering control, how to go over and around small obstacles

Our trail motorcycles are user friendly, lightweight, appropriately sized, durable, and confidence inspiring. The size of bike you choose is based on rider size, you need to be able to touch the ground to ride safely! Our semi-automatic bikes are 50cc and 110cc, and clutch bikes are from 125cc to 250cc. The gear you wear will also be sized to you and is the full line of the newest Fox apparel. You will get everything you need from head to toe: helmet, goggles, chest protector, jersey, gloves, elbow pads, knee pads, pants, and boots.

Cost: $295 (plus rentals) or $255 (with your ownbike).

This is an all day course (6 or so hours) that runs 2-3 times per year. Contact the park office for next available dates.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) is a US-based, not-for-profit organization sponsored by the US manufacturers and distributors for BRP, BMW, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Piaggio/Vespa, Suzuki, Triumph, Victory, and Yamaha motorcycles. The BC Off-Road Motorcycle Association (BCORMA) is Western Canada’s only MSF DirtBike School certified trainer. The DirtBike School coaches have years of experience and have graduated from MSF’s extensive, week-long instructor course. The MSF DirtBike School New Rider Training program is a fun and safe way for youth (over 6 years old) and adults to get into the great sport of off road motorcycle riding.

This is an all day (6 or so hours) course that starts with some class room style learning (like gearing up, parts of the motorcycle, bike inspection and set up), and then quickly progresses so the majority of the day (about 90%) will be spent riding. Riders will learn to properly use the controls (throttle, clutch, and brakes), body positioning, turning, stand up riding, and various hill challenges. They also learn important mental and visual habits for safe riding, rider responsibility, etiquette, and environmental concerns, as well as the importance of bike maintenance.

This course is offered once in the Spring and once in the Fall.  You need to register on the BCORMA website (http://bcorma.ca).

If you are renting one of our bikes, this is reserved directly through Popkum Motor Park. You will be riding one of our trail bikes that are user friendly, lightweight, appropriately sized, durable, and confidence inspiring. This lesson is for riders less than 6 years old who want to learn how to ride a motorcycle. Our Learn To Ride program caters to riders 6 and older, but some children less than 6 years old are ready to ride and just need a little one-on-one instruction to make it happen. This lesson is 2 hours long, including gearing up, so about ½ hour of instruction and 1 ½ hrs of seat time. The cost includes bike rental and gear rental as well as the instruction. The child must be able to ride a bicycle or coast with feet up on a strider bike and be able to touch the ground on a 50cc motorcycle. This lesson is catered to each specific rider, inquire with our office to see if this is the right option for your little rider!

For riders who have successfully completed the Learn To Ride Intro course and Evolution Level Two.

The whole 3-hour lesson is spent on the bike, so riders need to be geared up and ready to ride before the lesson start time. Class sizes are kept small (3-8 riders), with a max 1:5 instructor to student ratio. This course is separated into three 1-hour topics: cornering, logs and rocks, and hills and jumps.

The course covers:

    • The cornering lesson will touch on previous body position information from Evolution Level Two and build on how body positioning affects corners and steering. This lesson spends the majority of the time learning MX-style, foot-out cornering.
    • The rocks and logs lesson will build on the small obstacles learned in the Learn To Ride Intro and progress to being able to lift and lighten the front wheel for going over larger obstacles.

This lesson is for riders who already have motorcycle basics. Maybe you are coming from a road riding background and you want to take up dual sport riding. Maybe you used to ride dirt bikes when you were 16 and want to review the basics or learn the stuff you wish you knew the first time around.  Whether you are new to dirt or looking to refresh, you will be glad you took this course! Building on skills you already have, we will cover the dirt-riding basics that will make you a safer rider, more confident, and ready to tackle the off-road world. Topics are specific to you (as a one-on-one lesson), but can include braking on dirt, body positioning, standing, clutch control, obstacles (logs and rocks), hills and more.

If you are interested in the dual sport or adventure bikes… “dirt first” is the way to go. Developing your skills on one of our user friendly, lightweight, appropriately sized trail motorcycles is the easiest way to build skills. Learning on a light-weight bike gives you the opportunity to practice skills with confidence, without having to worry about wrestling your heavy bike. You will gain skills and abilities that are greater than what your dual sport or adventure bike can handle, and then you can transfer those skills to your big bike.

Cost: $265 (lesson & bike rental). Gear Rental for $75.

The second half of the rental is free time to practice your new skills in one of our trials areas or in the endurocross park. You can also add another hour of instruction to this package for $75/hr. Feel free to take advantage of this lesson special multiple times before you invest in your own equipment to know if trials is the style for you!

Our motocross instructors can teach you the basics to get into racing, or build on the skills you already have to help you get to the next level. We have built a specifically designed MX training area so you can work on your skills with your instructor in segments, away from the main track. Our main track is also equipped with MyLaps (transponders available to rent) so you are able to time yourself before and after to see the progress you have made! Designed as one-on-one lessons, they can also be taken in a small group provided all the riders are of a similar riding ability and wish to get a similar outcome from the lesson.

Riders in MX training require their own bikes. Membership and ride passes are required in addition to the lesson fee.
